Nigerian poet, essayist and novelist Dr Ben Okri delivered the 13th annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture at the University of Cape Town on 12 September 2012. Okri, in a lecture for which, he said, he’d made up a title just minutes before entering Jameson Hall – going with “Biko and the Tough Alchemy of Africa” – spoke of the role that South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggles, “one of the greatest struggles of our times”, played in his own life and that of others around Africa.
